Police in Burnaby have released footage of a shocking assault on an 84-year-old woman.

In the clip, which was recorded on Central Boulevard near the Metrotown SkyTrain Station, a younger woman can be seen approaching the senior, who is using a walking frame.

The younger woman then kicks the victim from behind, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground.

She was left shaken but not seriously injured, police said.

It happened on April 3.

Police provided the following description of the suspect:

“At this time, police do not have any information to indicate that the Asian victim was targeted based on her ethnicity; however, based off of what we are currently observing taking place in neighbouring municipalities it is an active investigative avenue,” police added.

“In accordance with the RCMPs bias-free policing policy, police do not collect race or ethnicity data related to specific offence types for statistical purposes.

“However in recent weeks police have noted some concerning incidents in which members of the Asian community in our city have been targeted.”

Anyone with information that would assist investigators is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-TIPS or solvecrime.ca
