(UPDATE: Sept. 20 @ 9:25 pm) - Hwy 97 has reopened to traffic in both directions following a lengthy closure this evening.

The main artery through the Central Okanagan shut down before 5 pm following a serious multi-vehicle crash.

It created headaches for a number of people trying to vote, which led to Elections Canada being flooded by calls from frustrated residents that were stuck in traffic.

There have been reports that the accident was fatal, but that has not been confirmed by officials at this time.

(Original story: Sept. 20 @ 5:15 pm) - The evening commute is busier than usual in the Kelowna-Lake Country area.

A crash near Beaver Lake Road has Hwy 97 closed in both directions.

Emergency crews are on scene and an assessment is currently in process.

Traffic is currently not moving at all on Glenmore Road either, motorists report.

There’s no estimated time for the highway to reopen, but DriveBC expects another update to come soon.

KelownaNow will update this story as information becomes available.
