Construction on the right-turn lane at Clement Avenue and Clifton Road will begin on Monday.
It’s one of four intersections in Kelowna being re-configured this summer to make it safer for both drivers and pedestrians.
ICBC is providing partial funding for the $90,000 project.
“A ‘smart right turn’ forces the vehicle to enter the cross street at a sharper angle, reducing the turning radius, which causes drivers to slow down to complete the turn,” explained a City of Kelowna release.
“The sharper entry angle also means that more of the intersection and cross street is within the driver’s immediate cone of vision allowing the driver to see oncoming traffic and pedestrians more clearly.”
Work is expected to be finished by the end of May, but while it’s ongoing there won’t be a right turn available from Clement onto Clifton and motorists will have to detour around it.
Anyone turning left from Clement onto Clifton will still be able to do so.
