(UPDATE: Jan. 3 @ 5:01 am) - The highway has been cleared.

All lanes were reopened on Thursday evening.

(UPDATE: Jan. 2 @ 3 pm) - The RCMP has confirmed that the crash west of Kamloops that has shut down the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) for most of the day was fatal.

Police say officers responded to the two-vehicle collision on Hwy 1 around 11 am.

Three people were taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries, while another sadly died in the crash.

“Motorists are asked to please avoid the area and watch DriveBC for updates related to the closure," said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

At this time, Hwy 1 remains closed in both directions in the Savona area and DriveBC doesn't anticipate another update until around 6 pm.

Police are not releasing any further information at this time, but are urging any potential witnesses, or those with relevant dash cam footage from the area this morning, to contact the RCMP at 250-314-1800.

(UPDATE: Jan. 2 @ 2:35 pm) - It looks like the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) will remain shut down west of Kamloops for a few more hours.

DriveBC says the major route remains closed in both directions due to a "multi-vehicle incident" in the Savona area.

A detour around the incident is available for passenger vehicles only.

The next update on the incident was originally expected around 4 pm, but DriveBC has pushed that estimate back to 6 pm "or if conditions change."
