(UPDATE: Oct. 4 @ 5:16 am): Mounties have confirmed that two people died in the crash on Hwy 1 near Tappen on Sunday night.
They were both adults, police said.
Two children riding in the vehicle – an SUV – were taken to hospital and were in a stable condition.
Police said the crash occurred at about 7:27 pm near Kirkpatrick Road.
The SUV, which was travelling east, collided with a truck heading west.
"The investigation has revealed that the driver of the SUV was travelling east in the west bound lanes," the RCMP explained.
"The SUV collided with the semi truck head-on as both drivers tried to avoid the collision."
The two adults were pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver had minor injuries and was not taken to hospital.
Police added: "The RCMP investigation is continuing but at this time it appears that this is a tragic case of driver error on the part of driver of the SUV."
(Original story: Oct. 3 @ 5:25 am): Hwy 1 has reopened after being closed in Tappen overnight.

According to DriveBC, it reopened at about 2 am.
A detour was in effect via Hwy 97, Hwy 97A and Hwy 97B during the closure.
