Driving along Hwy 3 in the area of Manning Park will be a little safer after some new installations over the past few weeks.

The Ministry of Transportation has installed a number of new variable speed limit electronic signs that will begin operating over the next few days.

It’ll help drivers travel slower and safely during bad weather, which often plagues the region during the winter months.

“Weather conditions can change very quickly where the highway starts climbing from the Fraser Valley towards the mountains,” said Clarie Trevena, minister of transportation.

“That’s why we are bringing in this new variable speed limit system, which allows us to slow traffic down and improve safety on Hwy 3 this winter.”

The system will use data from road surface sensors and traffic sensors to recommend lower speeds during these adverse conditions.

Four new signs have been installed in a seven kilometre stretch of highway between Hop and the Hwy 3/Hwy 5 junction.

There’s also one other sign in each direction that will feature digital messages with additional information for drivers.

When a variable speed limit sign shows a number that isn’t the usual speed limit, that becomes the new maximum and it’s enforceable under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
