School District #83 has removed the “hold and secure” order that was issued on Friday, Sept. 17 after protestors attempted to enter several school buildings in and around Salmon Arm.
Last week, there were several protests at the District Education Support Centre from those opposed to vaccinations and mask regulations.
The “hold and secure” order was issued to prevent unauthorized visitors from entering the schools while ensuring the safety of staff and students.
“Please know that the intent of our actions is to maintain environments which are safe for all students and staff. Thank you for your support and understanding,” explains Donna Kriger, superintendent of schools, in a statement.
According to the school district’s website, “hold and secure” is used when there is a security concern in the neighbourhood whereas a “lockdown” is used in response to danger within the school.
Students were not able to leave or enter their school buildings for the remainder of Friday while Monday was an “professional development day" and students were not in classes.
However, most schools in the district have been advised to limit the number of entry points and, with the exception of secondary schools, main entries will be locked after the opening bell.
Any visitors wishing to enter the school must call the main office and when possible, additional supervision is being added to playgrounds during recesses.
The school district has said it will be working with local RCMP to ensure any future protestors are kept away from all school properties.
Kriger thanked the school community for their patience and understanding and hopes to move ahead with focus on the students’ well-being and future achievements.
