A pair of gun related incidents made it a busy 24 hours for the Penticton RCMP.

The first one happened at noon on Wednesday when the RCMP stopped a pickup truck on King Street.

Police were initially alerted to the vehicle because it had the wrong plates on it, but recognized the 33-year-old male driver as someone who was prohibited from driving.

Initially the man cooperated, but out of nowhere decided to flee from police. He was chased down by attending officers and arrested a short distance away on Municipal Avenue.

During the search of the vehicle, a loaded sawed-off shotgun was located on the front passenger seat.

“This was a routine situation of a traffic violation that quickly turned into a much bigger incident with the potential for serious danger to the public and officers responding.” said Targeted Enforcement Unit commander Cpl. Scott Vanevery, “Our Police Officers face these unknown dangers every day, thankfully everyone was safe and the offender is in custody.”

The male remains in custody and is to appear in Penticton Provincial Court this afternoon on a number of charges.

The second incident happened shortly past midnight when the RCMP responded to a domestic situation in the 1300 block of Carmi Avenue where a firearm had reportedly been discharged.

A female resident safely exited the residence and attempts were made to contact the male inside.

It took until 6 a.m. for the Emergency Response Team to secure the area and police were able to safely arrest the male without incident.

The scene remains secure as the police wait for a warrant to search the residence for evidence.

The 49-year-old Penticton man is in custody awaiting a court appearance.
