The border between Canada and the United States is closed, but that doesn’t mean there’s no one crossing the border.
There’s still essential travel and Canadians residents returning home from south of the border, but that’s a miniscule amount of trips compared to the usual steady dose travel between the two countries.
Statistics Canada has now released its latest border-crossing data and it shows that there were 347,100 trips made between the two countries in July 2020.

That may seem like a large number given that we’re in the middle of a pandemic and the border is essentially closed, but it’s a 95% decrease from the 7.9-million trips made over the border in July 2019.
In addition, 233,700 of trips from the US to Canada in July were made by Canadian residents returning home.
Although well down from last year, July’s numbers were an 11.1% increase on how many trips were made in June.
Unsurprisingly, arrivals to Canada from overseas are significantly down year-over-year as well, as July’s 28,400 arrivals was a staggering 97.4% fall from the 1.1-million arrivals in July 2019.
The top source of arrivals from overseas is from the United Kingdom (2,200), while France (2,000) and China (1,400) round out the top three.
