Students from UBC Okanagan will gather at the Rotary Centre for the Arts to put forth their best debaters for cash prizes.
Student debaters will be judged by a high profile jury of community leaders, such as Mayor Colin Basran, as they use the platform to argue their platform, with a sense of enthusiasm.
“The debates are very funny, socially relevant and draw together students and the broader community,” said Carl Hodge, Professor of Political Science at UBCO. “I’m sure the public will enjoy the vigour that the student debaters bring to the fray – and we know that there will be some very quotable headlines that come from it!”
This year’s debate will tackle the question: “be it resolved that Canada has an obligation to take refugees.”
The first place finishers will receive $1,000 and the runners up $500. The Roger Watts Advocacy Debates is a partnership of the Philosophy, Political Science and Economics Unit at UBC's Okanagan campus and a community advisory committee.
The students will hit the stage at the Mary Irwin Theatre on Tuesday, March 22nd at 5:30 p.m. sharp. Tickets to attend the third annual Roger Watts Advocacy Debates are free but attendees must register online as seating is limited.
The late Roger Watts, a respected member of the Okanagan legal community was a skilled orator, and strong advocate. The Roger Watts Advocacy Debates have been organized in his memory to celebrate his many accomplishments through the time honoured tradition of public debate.
