A UBC researcher wants to speak to parents whose children have left their religious tradition.
Glendon Wiebe is working with UBCO’s Barb Pesut, who is an associate professor with the School of Nursing and Canada Research Chair. The two will be connecting with Okanagan families to study family bonds when religion changes or is abandoned.
“For some parents, keeping the faith is extremely important and if their child leaves, it can lead to a difficult and somewhat lonely journey,” Wiebe explained.
“Others, however, may accept it more readily, depending on the circumstances surrounding their child’s religious change."
Wiebe, a PhD candidate at the local campus, said they’ll be focusing on the parents views because their perspectives have often been ignosed.
The researchers are looking for families to take part in this confidential study.
“I recognize that it’s a sensitive topic for some, but I’d like to talk to individual parents to see how they have navigated and responded to their child’s departure from the family’s religious tradition,” said Wiebe.
