A pair of new residences are coming to UBC Okanagan over the next two years and the school won’t be footing the bill alone.

The Government of B.C. will contribute $18.7 million to build Skeena, a 220-unit on-campus student housing project that will be completed by next summer.

The total cost of Skeena will be $25 million, meaning the government’s contributions make up 75% of the price tag.

Construction has also begun on the second building, Nechako, which won’t be complete until spring 2021.

"Student housing is more than just buildings, they're unique communities that support learners as they work towards their career of choice," said Melanie Mark, minister of advanced education.

"The expansion of on-campus housing at UBC's Okanagan campus will reduce the burden in finding an affordable place to live.”

Skeena will be a six-storey, 6,750 square metre building with amenities like lounges, study space, activity rooms and laundry.

It’ll help address the list of more than 1,000 UBCO students waiting to get on-campus housing at the school.

Once both buildings are complete, UBCO will be able to offer housing to 2,120 students.
