Sarah Demers is the next local addition to the UBCO Heat’s women’s volleyball program.
The 6’ setter is currently playing for the Junior Heat Volleyball club and has been under the scope for while now says UBCO Heat Coach, Steve Manuel. He was pleased with being able to bring another local star onto the Heat roster.
"Sarah is another great example of our local development model here in the Okanagan. Before joining the Jr Heat 18u squad, Sarah developed under the tutelage of Heat Alumni Tammy Thomas and the T2 Volleyball program. For her school career she had the opportunity to train in Tony Sodaro's program at Kelowna Secondary."
Demers has shown promise both on the hard court and in the sand. On the Owls, Demers earned consecutive Valley championships with her senior AAAA team and was the co-captain of the KSS Squad in 2017.
Her record on the beach is even more impressive, capturing a U16 gold medal at the high school beach open in 2016, and a silver medal at the U18 high school beach open last summer.
Now Demers will continue her career at the University level, bringing a “depth and a physical element” to the Heat team, says Manuel.
"I am excited to be a part of the team that I have looked up to all these years and to develop my skills as a varsity setter," says Demers.
"The UBCO Heat volleyball program is also one of the best varsity teams in the country and It has been my goal since starting volleyball to play for the Heat, and I am proud to have been given the opportunity to join the team."
Joining Demers on the Heat squad are new recruits Stephanie Temme, also a Junior Heat player, Sydney Grills, from the Thunder Volleyball Club in Vancouver, as well as Jade Bussard and Samantha Gagnon from Red Deer.
Claudia Corneil will also be bringing some post-secondary experience to the roster as a transfer from Douglas College.
