The Conservative campaign machine stopped at Beasley Park in Lake Country today. With children playing in the background, Leader Andrew Scheer announced his party's promise of refundable tax credits for families with children in sports, sports, arts and educational programs outside school.
"I will introduce the Children's Fitness Tax Credit," promised Scheer. "that will allow parents to claim up to $1000 per child per year for fitness and sports-related expenses."
The Conservative Leader didn't stop there. "A new Conservative government will introduce the Children's Arts and Learning Tax Credit, for parents to claim up to $500 per child for arts programming and expenses or for other educational activities outside of school."
This just days after the Conservative campaign announced a tax cut that they claim will save the average taxpayer over $400 a year.
"I think this is fabulous," said Kelowna-Lake Country Conservative candidate Tracy Gray. "It goes with the theme of affordability. That's what I'm hearing a lot at the doors."
When asked about Kelowna-Lake country, a historical Conservative stronghold lost to the Liberals in 2015, Scheer took direct aim at Stephen Fuhr.
"The local Liberal member of parliament has let so many people down," said Scheer. "When the local member of parliament voted in favour of all of those tax hikes on small businesses, I heard it directly, our candidate heard it directly that their MP was not standing up for their interests."
Fuhr laughed off the criticism, pointing out that despite governing for far fewer years, Conservative governments have racked up the majority of the debt. "That's not an event-driven problem," added Fuhr. "They have all had problems in the past, that is a fiscal policy issue. So their policies don't yield better outcomes for people over time and ours do."
The Liberal candidate said economic indicators speak for themselves.
"The economy is growing," said Fuhr. "We have Canadians back to work and we've lifted 20 percent of Canadians who were in poverty out of poverty so I know which side of the line I want to be on."
Scheer's campaign team then hopped on a plane. Next stop: Calgary.
