Instead of just talking about what a densified downtown Kelowna is going to look like, the Okanagan Chapter of the Urban Development Institute has created a video to help.
The video was produced in Kelowna by Aplin & Martin and while the details are largely fictional, the images are a true representation of what the current trajectory could bring us within the next 30 or 40 years.
'It's intended to start a discussion about what the future of Kelowna might look like," said UDI Director Kevin Johnson.
Johnson said with the current zoning guidelines and the direction of the Official Community Plan, the video representation is not some outlandish exaggeration.
"Everything is focused towards an urban development and a lot of the growth for the city of 50 thousand people over many years to the future here. And that's what the city could look like in 30 to 40 years."
The video was displayed at last Friday's Our Future City Conference and people were drawn to it like a magnet.
"We got all kinds of reactions," said Johnson, "some positive. Some people are like: 'Never in a million years!'"
Johnson said there's never been a more important time for the public to get engaged in the planning process including the Official Community Plan.
Johnson said, per capita, Kelowna is undergoing more urban development than any other city in the country.
