A day after Kelowna City Council's decision not to stray from its policies and hoist a Pride flag, someone found another way to make a statement.
Tuesday evening, some chalk art appeared in front of the steps to City Hall.
The work was brought to our attention by a member of the Pride Society, but the organization is not taking credit for the work.
"I was told it was a group of concerned individuals," said Pride Co-President Blake Edwards, "over the negative comments that came from the article KelownaNow posted."
He is referring to some of the comments that appeared below our story on Facebook about whether the Pride flag should be raised at City Hall during Pride Week.
Edwards said the chalk work is "definitely appreciated as a sign of community support."
The work includes the message: 'KELOWNA HAPPY PRIDE' at the top and '50th ANNIVERSARY OF STONEWALL' below.
The 'Stonewall Riots' that occurred in Greenwich Village in New York, are widely considered a key event in the history of gay rights at the time and the LGBTQ2+ movement we see today.
