Stephen Fuhr went to bed last night feeling good about the opening of his campaign office. He woke up this morning to images of himself in blackface on his campaign signs. Several signs were vandalized in this way, presumably a reaction to recently published images of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in blackface from years gone by. He spoke with us about it outside his campaign office today.

"I think it's sad and unfortunate that that kind of sentiment exists in our community, and it was really disappointing," said Fuhr. But he said the point behind it is not hard to decipher.

"I think this was an attempt to tie me to the bigger conversation that's happening nationally right now," he acknowledged. "This story with the Prime Minister is the number one news story on the planet right now."

Fuhr said the whole thing brings about important conversations about racism and inequality. But he said people should pay attention to how Trudeau has responded.

"When that occurs I think it matters how these leaders handle it," he said. "I mean Justin Trudeau took ownership of it and said he's sorry for it and recognizes it for what it is now and identified that at the time, 20 years ago, he didn't make that connection."

Fuhr wasted little time sharing the images on Facebook, describing the incident as "sad".

Conservative Candidate Tracy Gray posted about it on her own Facebook page saying, in part.  “We reached out to that campaign to let them know and I called the Candidate directly to let him know that this is unacceptable and I do not condone this.”
