Buses without drivers. They aren't a futuristic concept, they are already on the streets in parts of the world and they have already been put in motion as part of a pilost project in Calgary and Edmonton. The company that brought E Bus to Kelowna says their autonomous buses, called ELA could be here sooner than you might think. Spokesperson John Stepovy stopped in at KelownaNow to talk about ELA and the future of autonomous buses.
"We'd love to see Ela in Kelowna. Absolutely," said Stepovy. "I don't know if it's 10 years, 5 years. Again there's still a lot of questions for sure and that regulatory side that has to be addressed."
Stepovy suggests the technology is ahead, and it's public acceptance that has some catching up to do.
"The vehicle can do it," said Stepovy. "Some of what needs to happen though is that public education. How do you in your vehicle, interact with an autonomous vehicle."
