VIDEO: Okanagan tech sector is 'accelerating'

The Okanagan tech scene is bustling, with 90% more people are working in the tech sector today than five years ago.  

That's just one of the encouraging statistics that were shared today as Accelerate Okanagan showcased it's latest economic impact report. 

The report says technology-related companies inject $1.67 billion into the regional economy.

There are currently 693 technology businesses operating in the Okanagan.  That's up 24% since 2013 according to the report with tech companies now employ well over 12 thousand people in the valley.

"We're interested to see that the Okanagan's tech workforce is getting younger, and that contract workers make up more than 15 percent of those working in the sector," said Raghwa Gopal, CEO of Accelerate Okanagan. 

The study was compiled in conjunction with the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission.

"The 2018 Economic Impact of the 'Okanagan Tech Sector provides proof to back up anectotal evidence pointing to the Okanagan as an exciting hub for tech and innovation in BC," said COEDC Director Corie Griffiths.

Accelerate Okanagan is a business accelerator for Okanagan-based tech companies in the startup or growing phases. Headquartered in Kelowna.
