An online poll of Canadians shows a willingness to go along with public health orders, even if it means living under a temporary curfew.

The poll by Leger showed 67% of Canadians would support a 10 pm to 5 am stay-at-home order if the spread of the pandemic was serious enough and public health officials recommended it.

When KelownaNow asked people in Kelowna, they seemed every bit as receptive to the prospect of such an order, should it be deemed necessary at some point.

"I'd have no problem with it honestly," said one young man, out for a walk in Kelowna's City Park. His response falls into line with the slight majority in his age category.

But we did hear some pushback from the younger demographic. "I don't think we should have to be told that we have to stay home," said one young woman. "We should be able to be trusted that we could go out and social distance and keep our masks on."

Leger found 55% of people aged 18-34 would support such an order. Age makes a difference on this question. A more decisive 80% of respondents over 65 said they would support a curfew order under these circumstances.

When we put the question to people in the older demographic the answers did seem more certain.

"I would 100%," said one woman. "If that's what's going to make things better, absolutely," said her walking partner.

The Leger poll was conducted in collaboration with the Association of Canadian Studies.
