The Okanagan Campus of UBC just keeps getting bigger. The first-year class of over 2,300 students is settling into the campus this term, bringing the total student population to over 10,700.

"This is just a fantastic success story", said Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal Deborah Buszard.

Buszard said bigger numbers means more for students. "We can only offer a credible program in a subject if we have a critical mass of professors," said Buszard. And to do that we need to have a critical mass of students."

When UBC's Okanagan Campus opened in 2005 there were 3,500 students in 12 buildings. Now enrollment is closing in on 11,000 with two new campus residences under construction.

"Growing the way we have," added Buszard, "is better able to serve this community by providing a full range of programming from data science, to nursing to astrophysics."

And the plan is to continue that growth. "We see a population on campus eventually, around 2040 of about 18,000 to 20,000 students.
