Taking a spin on awareness, the Okanagan Clinical Trials will be hosting a free film screening as a means of addressing the severity of Alzheimer’s disease.

Members of the community are invited to attend the private screening of Still Alice, free of charge, on March 26th at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Extreme Theatre in West Kelowna, the event is sure to be a fun yet enlightening experience.

Still Alice, Staring Julianne Moore, is based on the novel written by Lisa Genova. Moore plays the role of Alice, a renowned Columbia University linguistics professor, who is ultimately diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

As a means of raising awareness about Alzheimer’s in a unique way, Okanagan Clinical Trials believes the film will provide an opportunity for people to both relate to and learn about subject matter that is often complex and frightening.

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating condition with very few viable treatment options,” said Dr. Paul Latimer, psychiatrist and principal investigator for Okanagan Clinical Trials. “With an aging population and numbers on the rise, it is very important to continue searching for safe and effective treatments.”

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and affects almost 30 million people worldwide. As a progressive condition with no current cure, the disease typically begins by affecting an individual's short-term memory.

It worsens over time and eventually leads to death. Typically, Alzheimer’s affects people over the age of 65, but some develop early-onset Alzheimer’s much earlier in life.

For those interested in attending this event, you should call Okanagan Clinical Trials at 250-862-8141 and ask for Carol or Kim in order to reserve your seat. Alternatively, individuals can visit the Okanagan Clinical Trials website to reserve tickets. Seating for the event is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
