A community shredding event focussed on the prevention of identity theft is being held at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs’ Westside Youth Centre on Saturday, August 22nd, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Identity theft is a concern for people of all backgrounds. When sensitive information falls into the wrong hands, it can lead to financial loss as well as to damage to a person’s credit score and reputation.

One of the commonest ways that identity thieves obtain personal information is from trash cans. Dumpster divers with bad intentions look for information ranging from full names and addresses to social insurance numbers, usernames and passwords for online accounts, mothers’ maiden names, credit card information, signatures and driver’s license numbers.

One of the simplest ways to protect yourself from identity theft is to have sensitive documents shredded before disposal. Today, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Okanagan Paper Shredding will be destroying unneeded confidential documents for free at the Westside Youth Centre in exchange for donations to the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. The event will be hosted by West Kelowna Community Policing at 2390 Dobbin Road, in the parking lot of the West Kelowna RCMP Detachment.
