A West Kelowna winery has the best wine in the world.

Kalala Organic Estate Winery recently won top spot in the Chardonnay du Monde competition. The competition took place in France from Mar. 8-11. Back in 2010 and 2014 the West Kelowna winery placed in the top ten, but this year was the year they finally took home gold.

“This is a great honour, not only for us, but for Canada and the Okanagan,” said Karnail Singh Sidhu, owner and viticulturist at Kalala Organic Estate Winery.

“This is a very competitive competition, so it is wonderful to be recognized at this level, among some of the best winemakers in the world.”

During the competition 782 different types of wine were sampled from 39 countries.

The competition saw 300 international expert judges, who decided that the 2013 Kalala Chardonnay Icewine was the overall best.

“Our 2013 Chardonnay Icewine uses certified organic grapes that were grown in West Kelowna at the Catana Vineyard. We started picking the grapes on November 14th and we picked 3.7 tons of grapes,” explained Sidhu, who has more than 20 years of experience in organic agriculture.

The icewine went through a 69-day fermentation and partial barrel aging.
