A West Kelowna family is safe after their home caught ablaze overnight.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Chad Gartrell, sometime after midnight, crews responded to a single-family home in the 2600 block of Boucherie Road after getting a call about a structure fire.

First arriving firefighters found heavy flames on the upper sundeck, which quickly extended to the deck roof, attic space and living room.

"Crews did an excellent job knocking the fire down with large diameter hand lines prior to making entry into the structure to complete a primary search and conduct fire control operations," said Gartrell.

Though the family was at home when the blaze ignited, they did get away with no significant injuries. All their pets escaped safely as well.

The fire investigator is now on scene looking to determine what started the incident. At this point, the blaze is not being deemed suspicious in nature.
