Construction is set to begin next month on the Boucherie multi-use pathway project.
In an update headed to West Kelowna council on Tuesday, city staff say crews will start work on April 17 on the section between Montigny and Gregory Road.
The project will see the construction of a 2.4 kilometre path that stretches from Ogden Road to Green Bay Road and will include road upgrades, bike lanes, crosswalks and drainage improvements.
“When complete, this project will help connect Boucherie Road to the waterfront, the West Kelowna Wine Trail and many of the amazing tourist attractions that exist near Boucherie Road,” reads the report.
In addition to the on-street improvements, crews will be realigning the corner at Boucherie Road and Montigny Road to address “significant” safety concerns.
A new off-street pathway will be installed along The Hatch winery’s frontage and through the Quails' Gate property, tying into Green Bay Road, providing a scenic path through the two wineries.
City staff say the on-street works will be constructed in four sections.
The first section, between Montigny and Gregory Roads, will result in single lane alternating traffic until June.
The second section will complete the Ogden to Montigny Roads sections. Boucherie Road will be closed weekdays between those two roads with a detour available. Construction is expected to begin in mid-June and last until late August.
After the Labour Day long weekend, crews will begin work south of Sunnyside Road to complete the section in front of Quails’ Gate. That work is anticipated to last about six weeks.
Off-street works will start in late March along The Hatch’s frontage. Crews will be working on this section of the multi-use path for about six weeks, followed by the work on the Quails' Gate property, which is scheduled to take about two months.
The project is estimated to cost $3.7 million.
Currently, the city has $2.4 million set aside for the 2023 Boucherie Multi-Use Pathway fund and $1.3 million in 2022 Infrastructure Improvement funding. City staff say they anticipate to receive a $500,000 grant from the province to fund the remaining amount.
