West Kelowna mayor Gord Milsom was on hand Thursday afternoon to break ground on a unique development.
The ceremony marked the beginning of construction on Carrington View, a net-zero energy ready rental apartment building.
Developed by Highstreet Ventures, the project is 100% electric and zero carbon, with a common area fully powered by 304 solar panels and a target of 65% waste diversion.
“Our goal is to own and operate 1,000 net-zero homes by the end of 2024,” said Scott Butler, President of Highstreet.
“We are demonstrating that net-zero ready market rentals can be built today, 12 years prior to the legislated requirement, with no difference in the end financial result than building to the code minimum. We look forward to building many more net-zero ready and Net Zero buildings across Western Canada.”
The rental development was also selected as one of the 11 recipients of the CleanBC Better Buildings Competition.
The competition provides up to $390,000 in financial incentives to developers showcasing net-zero building practices.
