It’s a beautiful day to play some hockey, win great prizes and celebrate Canada’s favourite game.
And that’s exactly what hundreds of people are doing in West Kelowna today as the Hometown Hockey tour visits for the weekend.
Warriors jerseys were out in force as fans of all ages headed to the Mt. Boucherie Community Centre for a day of fun.
Among the freebies on offer are kids’ jerseys, pizza, Timmy’s coffee and plenty of hockey-related entertainment.
A video game area has been set up for those who would rather stay indoors, while former Vancouver Canucks goalie Kirk McLean is on site for photos and autographs.
With plenty of outdoor activities also on offer - including a mini rink - the day is already shaping up to have a fairground atmosphere.
There is also a huge stage set up, which on Sunday will play host to Ron MacLean.
On Saturday, though, it was the scene of a great triumph for the de Man family, who won a prize after displaying their superior knowledge of the game.
Lincoln, 5, celebrated winning a Playmobil set with brother Mason, 7, and parents Tyler and Lynsey.
Tyler told KelownaNow he was delighted that Hometown Hockey had come to the city.
“We’re having a good time - anything bringing sports and the community together is great,” he said.
He added: “My family was nervous on stage, but we won the big prize. We’re happy.”
Event co-sponsors Scotiabank, meanwhile, said their free jerseys for kids are proving extremely popular.
Christy Lehmberg, a small business banking adviser, said her team had been handing out the shirts “nonstop”.
She added: “We completely ran out of one size - we had to go drive and get more.”
Fellow sponsors Dodge were also giving away toques - as well as the chance to win a 2019 Ram 1500.
On Sunday Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will host the big broadcast as the Maple Leafs and Arizona Coyotes game is screened at the centre.
The event opens tomorrow at 11 a.m, and closes tonight at 6 p.m.
