The crash that slowed traffic on Hwy 97 through West Kelowna this morning was fatal, police have confirmed.

The RCMP said that an off-duty officer was on their way to work shortly before 5 am when they were one of the first to arrive at the scene of the crash.

According to police, a loaded logging truck stopped at a red light in the northbound lane of Hwy 97 at Boucherie Road was rear-ended by a black 2008 Dodge Caliber.

Unfortunately, the lone occupant of the passenger vehicle, a 53-year-old Kelowna man, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The driver of the logging truck is cooperating with police and the investigation into the crash is not of a criminal nature.

The RCMP noted that Victim Services are engaged and supporting the family of the victim through this difficult time.

“This was a terrible motor vehicle collision leaving a family mourning the loss of their father,” said Cst. Mike Della-Paolera. “The RCMP would like to thank all the first responders who attended this difficult scene.”

Investigators are requesting anyone that witnessed the crash, or has any relevant dash cam footage, to call the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
