West Kelowna Fire Rescue acted quickly when dealing with a pair of incidents on Saturday.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Brent Watson, at 12:30 pm, crews responded to reports of a growing grass fire on the bluffs northwest of the Bennett Bridge. Fire behavior was initially reported as rank one, though it quickly spread into heavier and denser bush.

After deploying a hose line, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. They then constructed a handguard around the perimetre of the fire, estimated to be 150 by 75 metres.

While crews were finishing cleaning up this incident, a second grass fire ignited at the opposite end of the city. Firefighters rushed to the Glen Canyon area of Glenrosa to find an abandoned campfire and a nearby pile of burning debris.

That incident was dealt with quickly. All West Kelowna Fire resources, including off-duty staff, were needed to respond to the two concurrent fires.

Both fires were human-caused.
