Despite having only opened in 2016, at a cost of $400,000, West Kelowna’s skatepark will soon have to be relocated.
Currently situated just north of the city’s Johnson Bently Aquatic Centre, the skatepark will eventually be torn up to make way for the recently approved City Hall.
However, it’s not yet a foregone conclusion as to where the future of West Kelowna’s kickflips and ollies will land.
City council has submitted a non-farm use application to the Agricultural Land Commission to relocate the skatepark to a nearby portion of ALR lands within Memorial Park.
Much of the land in question is currently used as a parking lot.
If approved, the non-farm use would allow the city to use the 1.2 acre parcel of land for a new skatepark while also continuing to use it for parking.
Construction of the new two-storey, 45,000 square foot city hall and library facility is expected to begin later this summer.
