When officers arrived, they found what they describe to be an “intoxicated” man, who was being restrained and surrounded by a group of people.

According to witnesses, the 33-year-old suspect got into a verbal exchange with a woman, which quickly escalated to the alleged physical assault.

Police say the man also allegedly tossed the woman’s personal belongings into Okanagan Lake.

“As bystanders began to gather in an effort to prevent the suspect from leaving, the victim called a family member who attended the scene and confronted the suspect to await the arrival of police,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“It is believed that the suspect proceeded to assault that family member, who then physically restrained the suspect with the support of bystanders until police could arrive on scene.”

The victims, a woman in her 30s and man in his 50s who are both from West Kelowna, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

After being brought into police custody, the suspect was held overnight and was expected to make an appearance in court today.
