(UPDATE: Aug. 5 @ 3 pm) - Officials have confirmed the body of a 33-year-old Albertan man was recovered from Okanagan Lake on Wednesday.
The man first went missing on Saturday, Aug. 1, when he failed to resurface after cliff jumping near Rattlesnake Island.
West Kelowna RCMP, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team all assisted in the recovery.
"The depth of the water as well as the topography of the lake made the recovery of the deceased very challenging," says Sgt Joel Glen of the West Kelowna RCMP.
"We would like to extend our thanks for the hard work of COSAR, Peachland Fire and Rescue, as well our team. Our heartfelt condolences go out the family and loved ones of the deceased."
The man's identity has not been released and criminality is not suspected.
(Original Story: Aug. 1) - Police in West Kelowna are trying to recover the body of a swimmer who has presumably drowned in Okanagan Lake.
According to RCMP, on Saturday at 2:40 pm, officers responded to reports that a man had not resurfaced after cliff jumping near Rattlesnake Island. Residents in the area attempted to locate the 33-year-old Alberta man but couldn't find him.
West Kelowna RCMP, Peachland Fire Rescue, and members of Central Okanagan Search and Rescue were all on scene yesterday. Despite their best efforts, all attempts to locate the man came up negative.
As of now, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is on location attempting to find the man's body.
“For the safety of our divers and the entire search team, we request that boaters remain away from the area while we complete our search,“ said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “At this time, we are unable to estimate how long this operation will be on-going."
investigators believe there was no criminality involved in the man's death. The BC Coroners Service has been notified.
