As more residents begin to return home after being evacuated from their homes due to the White Rock Lake wildfire, the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) will be expanding operations of the North Westside Transfer Station.
On Friday, Sept. 3, residents of West Kelowna were notified of an increase in bear activity.
It is that time of year when bears are in search of food to prepare for the winter months.
Some populations may have also been displaced by this wildfire – residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and aware.
The RDCO stresses the importance of not putting fridges or freezers out until just before their scheduled collection time.
In an effort to continue supporting evacuees who have since returned home while keeping wildlife conflicts minimal, the collection of ruined fridges and freezers will continue until Tuesday, Sept. 14.
The RDCO points out that the transfer station has expanded its operations and will be open daily from 8 am to noon.
The transfer station will remain closed in the afternoons to deal with the increase in waste and hours will return to normal on Oct. 1.
Although the White Rock Lake wildfire is being held, it is still an active work site and residents are reminded to be cautious of wildlife, hazard trees, spot fires and debris.
The Rapid Assessment Team has inspected more than 340 structures for occupancy suitability and placed placards on those that they have assessed:

green – minor to no fire damage

orange – restricted use
-
red – unsafe
