West Kelowna’s Boucherie Road was subject to a lengthy closure this summer during the construction of the city’s new “Wine Trail” project.
The project is now nearing its November completion date, but a local association calling itself Audience Group has been quick to criticize a noticeable construction quirk.
"Don’t forget to try out our very friendly brand new sidewalks with their adorable telephone poles in the middle (the blind and wheelchair bound need not try out our new sidewalks for fear of injury and law suit)," wrote Audience Group in a letter to KelownaNow.
However, West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater says the odd design is as much a surprise to local government as it is to residents.
"We were shown pictures of the project's design and there sure weren't poles in the middle of the sidewalk. So we're asking the same questions," said Findlater.
"There's a report coming to council and there are means to rectify it within the project's budget."
According to Findlater, the project's contingency plan will allocate the funds to rework the design, although there is no timeline yet for when further construction would occur.
Approved in 2016, the total cost of the project, including construction, land acquisitions, utilities, watermain, geotechnical and contingency is estimated at $8.75 million.
