It was a busy evening for West Kelowna Fire Rescue Crews as three incidents had themselves feeling the heat.
At approximately 6 p.m., WKFR crews (Rescue 31 and Utility 31) were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle incident on the Coquihalla connector. While those units were still committed to the Coquihalla, a call came for a structure fire in a single-family residence in the McIver Road area of Glenrosa.
Crews that first arrived at the fire reported flames through the roof of the residence. The firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading through the home and contained it to the upstairs living area.
The home's four residents and their three pets all managed to get out safely and are being cared for by Regional Emergency Support Services. The cause of the blaze appears to have come from the home's chimney but extended into the wall and ceiling spaces, resulting in structural involvement.
While WKFR was battling the fire in Glenrosa, yet another call came in for a car fire with possible extension into an adjacent structure. The last two available WKFR units were dispatched to the scene along with aid support from the Kelowna Fire Department. The fireman worked to the best of their ability and kept the fire from spreading.
After tonight's incidents, WKFR wants to remind residents to be prepared for winter conditions at all time, meaning ensure that wood burning stoves, fireplaces and appliances are cleaned/inspected regularly, make sure to have working smoke detectors, and always have a home escape plan.
