The City of West Kelowna will kick off December and the holiday season in a festive way next week.
The annual Light Up will be held on Brown Road, from Main Street to Gossett Road, on Friday Dec. 3 from 5-8 pm.
At 6 pm, the lights will turn on and residents are encouraged to come join in on the fun and enjoy the festivities.
“The free, family-friendly event will be held in keeping with Interior Health requirements for outdoor ‘flow through events,’” the City explained.
“The adapted format will allow visitors to move along the street in their own groups and take part in activity stations, and interact with vendors over short periods of time.”
Activities will be spread out and no live performances or speaking events will take place in an effort to discourage gathering in large groups at specific sites.
There will, however, be fun activity stations for the kids, which includes a treat station and letters to Santa, while community groups will also be on hand to hand out warm drinks.
If the weather behaves, the City will also treat residents to a high-altitude fireworks show starting at 8:30 pm.
“The fireworks are being launched in Westbank Centre so that several neighbourhoods can view the show from home or at a distance,” said the City.
“The show’s exact location is not being provided this year to discourage large stay-in-place gatherings.”
Anyone whose views of Westbank Centre are obscured by Mt. Boucherie or other buildings may want to find a better vantage point prior to the show, the City added.
In addition to the Light Up, the City will be hosting its second annual Twinkle Tour from Dec. 1 through Jan. 3.
Residents can submit their own home to be included and download a map to take the self-guided tour through the City website.
Several public locations will be included as part of the tour, including:
- Brown Road
- CNR Wharf and Gellatly Waterfront and Bridge
- Mt. Boucherie Recreation Complex, the four fire halls, Municipal Hall and the Elliott Road operations building
- Various roundabouts in the City
