Anyone who enjoys hiking at Mount Boucherie may have to find another spot to use this month.
Crews have begun wildfire mitigation work on Mount Boucherie, which will result in the closure of multiple trails.
The City of West Kelowna says the work will begin east of Jim Lind Arena and Royal LePage Place and move west to the Rush Trailhead.
“The work will involve the pruning of low lying branches, thinning the tree canopy, removing dying and dangerous trees, clearing overgrown shrubs and ground debris and hauling forest fire fuels from the site,” explained a City release.
As the clearing activity moves to more publicly accessible areas of the mountain, different trails will be temporarily closed and signage will be posted to indicate mitigation zones.
Trail users are asked to use caution by watching for signs and staying clear of work areas.
This is priority work identified in West Kelowna’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan and is made possible through funding from the provincial government.
