UPDATE: Evacuees of Batchelor Heights wildfire cleared to return home

(Update 8:30 p.m.) - Officials are now allowing residents to return home following the wildfire above Batchelor Heights in North Kamloops.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) has make great progress and the grassfire, estimated at 60 hectares in size, is no longer threatening homes in the area.

Crews from KFR and BC Wildfire Service will continue to work the fire through the night.

(Update 7:30 p.m.) - A tactical evacuation of 12 homes in the Batchelor Heights neighbourhood has been issued. 

Evacuated residents are asked to report to the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre where a comfort centre is being established.

Kamloops Fire Rescue is reporting steady progress on the grassfire, but are unable to confirm an estimated size of the fire at this time.

Social media posts show plenty of flames and smoke are visible from the city.

BC Wildfire Services is aware of the fire but could not provide any details at this time.
