An ostrich farm in Edgewood is seeking help as they try to keep their animals safe from a nearby wildfire.
Several wildfires are currently burning near the community, including the Michaud Creek wildfire, which is currently estimated at 4,600 hectares.
Although an evacuation order is in place, the owners say they cannot leave their more than 500 ostriches behind.
The family farm, run by Karen Espersen and Trevor Klug, is also taking care of animals and livestock of other community members.
A GoFundMe started by their family member, Alyson, says that in order to keep the animals safe, they need supplies.
Alyson said that her aunt, Espersen, lost her home to a fire years ago.
“She loves animals more than anyone I know and she will not leave them to die, please help us do everything we can to keep them safe,” she said.
“They have been working around the clock with soaker hoses to protect their property and animals but are in desperate need of feed and hay for the animals, as well as gas for generators, water, and other supplies.”
Despite their efforts so far, Alyson says that things are getting worse, with three wildfires surrounding the area and strong winds picking up. As a result, more people are going to be evacuating and more animals will be brought to the farm.
The GoFundMe adds that they have arranged an airdrop for feed that should arrive today.
