The former number one ranked player in the world, Tiger Woods, has made his highly anticipated return to professional golf.

The 40-year-old has been out of the game for 15 months, undergoing surgery twice in that time, but he teed it on Thursday for round one of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Woods started off hot, making his first birdie of the year on just his fourth hole.

He followed that up with three straight birdies on holes six, seven and eight, bringing him into a tie for the lead at -4.

The touch is there.

Tiger has now made 2 birdies and 0 bogeys thru 6 holes.

That didn't last long though, as Woods bogeyed the very next hole and then added another bogey on 11 to fall back to -2 on the day.

He managed to level it out at that point and even made a birdie on 15 to move back to -3, but he hit another rut coming in with a double bogey on both the 16th and 18th holes.

Woods finished the round at +1, nine shots back of J.B. Holmes who sits in the lead at -8.

"It could have been something really good today," he said about his round. "I got off to a nice solid start and made a few mistakes there and consequently got it going the wrong way."

Woods will be back in action tomorrow for round two of the Hero World Challenge and barring any set backs or injuries, he'll be back in the fold for the entirety of the 2017 PGA season.
