British Columbian golf fans could be in for quite the treat in 2023.
Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver is reportedly in talks to make a bid for the President's Cup, a major international tournament in the golf world.
“Recently, the club has been asked to participate in a bid process which could see Shaughnessy host the Presidents Cup in 2023,” said Jason Sigurdson, Shaughnessy’s GM.
“We are in the preliminary steps of this process and are working closely with Golf Canada to fully research the extent of the opportunity.”
Shaughnessy has already hosted a pair of PGA events in the 2005 and 2011 Canadian Open, but the President’s Cup is a far bigger tournament.
The biggest challenge for the Vancouver golf course would be convincing the PGA Tour it has enough space to hold the event.
“We have to have them come out and take a look and see if it is the right type of situation because it is so different than the Open,” Sigurdson said.
Cost is another issue, as Shaughnessy would likely need support from both the provincial and federal government to host the event.
“We need to know what this thing costs and the reality is we don’t,” Sigurdson said.
“We have some ballpark figures, but it’s tough to say how it all breaks down. That would be next step, to figure out how you would fund a bid like this.”
The President’s Cup is played every two years, typically in early October, and pins the top American golfers against the rest of the world, with the exception of Europe.
That means golfers from Asia, Africa, Central and South American, Mexico and Canada, including Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin in 2017, all team up to take on the Americans.
The United States takes on Europe in the very similar, but older, Ryder Cup, which takes place in alternate years as the President’s Cup.
The President’s Cup has only come to Canada once, in 2007, when the competition was held at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
That year, Canadian Mike Weir defeated Tiger Woods in their Sunday singles match.
