Thursday night was one to forget for the Washington Capitals, but not for Madison Bowey.
During a 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the 22-year-old picked up an assist on the game’s final goal.
Normally, an assist in a blowout loss is nothing to write home about, but for Bowey it was his first NHL point in just his fifth career game.
He’ll certainly have to embellish the story for his future grandkids, however, as it wasn’t the prettiest goal and his contribution was the second assist.
Bowey did start the play, chipping the puck out of the zone to Jay Beagle, who fed it along to Chandler Stephenson.
Stephenson then darted down the left side and swung the puck on net from behind the goal line.
The puck hit the side of the net, bounced of Canucks’ goalie Anders Nilsson’s foot and into the cage behind him. (Watch the entire goal here)
Typically, Bowey would throw that puck on his mantle to celebrate the major milestone, but it’s not that simple this time around.
The goal was Chandler Stephenson’s first in the NHL, a major milestone for him as well.
When this happens, the puck is usually split in half for the two players to share, so both Bowey and Stephenson may be going home with half a momento.
