Anything you can do I can do better.
It seemed like that was the attitude of Dillon Dube after Kole Lind’s impressive performance during game one of the Canada-Russia series on Monday.
Dube followed up Lind’s three point Player of the Game performance with a three point Player of the Game performance of his own, but Team WHL was unable to pull out a second straight win.
Russia battled back from a 3-0 deficit, which included three goals in the third period, to take game two of the series 4-3.
Dube opened the scoring for Team WHL just 90 seconds into the game, which was the only scoring in the first despite a 17-6 shot advantage for the Russians.
David Quenneville of the Medicine Hat Tigers would add a pair of goals in the second, both assisted by Dube, to give Team WHL a 3-0 lead.
The tide seemed to turn when Russia’s goalie Mikhail Berdin stopped Lind on a penalty shot in the second period.
Only a few minutes later, Russia would get their first goal of the series courtesy of Mikhail Maltsev, making it 3-1 for Team WHL through two periods of play.
The visitors would then score the aforementioned three unanswered goals in the third period to take the 4-3 lead, which is how things would end on Tuesday night.
Despite the loss, Dube did receive Player of the Game honours and the Team WHL captain’s five points in two games is a feat only one other WHLer had achieved in the event’s history.
The series now moves into the hands of Team OHL for games in Owen Sound and Sudbury on Thursday and Monday.
The final leg of the series will take place in Eastern Canada, as Team QMJHL hosts the Russians in Charlottetown and Moncton next Tuesday and Thursday.
The series is currently tied at three points apiece.
