Kelowna Rockets’ captain, Rodney Southam, has decided on the next step for his hockey career.
The 20-year-old has committed to Acadia University to play for the Axemen in the upcoming 2017-2018 hockey season.
After a four-year WHL career with the Rockets and the Tri-City Americans, Southam is heading east.
"It was tough making the final decision to go to Acadia, but they showed a lot of interest in me," Southam explained. "I think going out east will be good for my hockey career."
Southam said his time in Kelowna not only prepared him for the next step in his hockey career, but the next step in life.
"The Rockets helped me with a lot, not only in my hockey career, but in maturing me into a man," Southam said. "I believe they did an amazing job for me and I couldn't ask for much more."
The Saskatchewan native has yet to decide on an academic path, but says the school and his family will help him with those decisions.
Southam finished his WHL career with 41 goals and 60 assists for 101 points in 247 games, adding 329 penalty minutes along the way.
He also played in 57 career playoff games, 52 of them for Kelowna, helping the Rockets win the 2015 Ed Chynoweth Cup.
When he heads out east to Acadia, Southam will be joining former teammate Chance Braid in an Axemen uniform.
