Changes to the major midget schedule for the upcoming season have forced the cancellation of the Kelowna International Major Midget Tournament (KIMMT) for 2018.
The announcement was made by tournament organizers on Thursday.
“After much deliberation, we regret to announce that the KIMMT tournament must take a hiatus for the coming 39th tournament, originally scheduled for January 2018, while we contemplate our options for future tournament dates in 2019,” said a statement.
The KIMMT tournament has prided itself on being one of the most competitive midget hockey tournaments in Western Canada.
It’s been recognized for its notable differentiators, like icing four officials, a minimum five game format, full stop-time and live streaming of games.
Many young men have played in the tournament on their way to become elite hockey players.
The list of tournament alumni includes Brett Hull, Cliff Ronning, Russ Courtnall, Paul Kariya, Jeff Friesen, Jarome Iginla, Willie Mitchell, Justin Schultz, Martin Jones, Tyson Barrie and Curtis Lazar.
