With 2017 just around the corner and New Year’s resolutions fresh on your mind, now is the perfect time to sign up for the Okanagan College Half Marathon.

Early bird registration is now open to the public for the college’s 2017 Half Marathon, 10 kilometre run and relay race, which all take place Sunday, April 9th in Kelowna.

The not-for-profit race is now in its 15th year and will once again be raising scholarship funds to support students involved in recreation and athletics.

“I’m really happy that we’ve been able to grow this race over the years and to improve the experience for runners,” said Race Director, Christine Ulmer. “We now have a 10km distance for those who prefer a shorter distance and of course our relay gives groups of people the opportunity to participate together.

Ulmer added that the fact that all the race’s proceeds go towards supporting Okanagan College students was just ‘icing on the cake’.

The Half Marathon is a 21.1km course which takes runners from the campus along the flat Abbott corridor and through the downtown waterfront before turning around at Knox Mountain.

Runners will be treated to lakeside views as they make their way back through City Park and Gyro Beach en route back to the campus.

Meanwhile, the 10km has a similar route, but instead of carrying on through the city’s downtown core runners will turn around just past the bridge at City Park.

The relay race covers the same course as the Half Marathon and allows up to five runners participate in segments of around 4km each.

Upon completion of the races, runners can join the festivities in Okanagan College’s Centre for Learning where there will be food, door prizes and awards.

Prize money will be awarded to the top three runners in the male and female divisions of the Half Marathon.

There’s also a need for volunteers, so if you want to get involved but don’t want to run, visit www.okanagan.bc.ca/halfmarathon.
