A Vernon resident has landed his first gold medal in Snowboard Cross at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.

Kevin Hill had the ride of his lifetime on Friday as an early lead kept him ahead of his competitors all the way to the finish line. The 28 year old has finally won a gold medal at the games, and had previously won a silver medal in the 2011 games. Hill has longed to be a part of the Canada Olympic team but came up just short of that goal for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. But Hill redeemed himself with a spot on the team at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and finished eighth overall in men’s snowboard cross.

The City of Vernon is passing along their congratulations to Hill and his tremendous achievement.

“A lifelong dream for Kevin has been realized today and we celebrate his accomplishment with him,” said Mayor Akbal Mund. “Vernon continues to produce local athletes who are attaining the highest standards in the sports world. We would also like to thank the coaches, trainers and parents that help these athletes succeed.”

A party is planned to celebrate Hill’s accomplishment on Sunday evening at Monashee’s Bar and Grille.
