Penticton RCMP have confirmed that they are investigating a Kamloops man following an incident at a junior hockey game at South Okanagan Events Centre.

Criminal charges could be laid against the father of a BC junior hockey player following an incident with referees who works on his son's game at the South Okanagan Events centre this past week.

The police suggest that the exchange involved profanities with a threat of physical harm directed at the referees.  This altercation was reported to the BC Hockey League's (BCHL) director of officiating the following day.

"We feel that the security of our teams, which we always review, is adequate.  We value the safety of our official extremely highly," said BCHL commissioner John Grisdale

"Violence degrades the world’s fastest, most physically challenging and most highly skilled game. Hockey is not, and has never been, a law of its own," said Emile Therien, past president of the Canada Safety Council and father of former NHL defencemen Chris Therien.

While cases of parents becoming violent or threatening at their children's hockey games is not a new trend, this case however brings it to light once again.

The long standing debate about violence in the sport of hockey continues throughout the NHL.  The police investigation into this matter is ongoing.
