The City of Vancouver could be getting a road named after a legendary hockey coach.
The inspirational coach and former player Pat Quinn passed away in November after lengthy illness. In remembrance of his contributions to the city, Vancouver is considering renaming a section of Abbott Street nearby Rogers Arena “Pat Quinn Way”.
The City will be considering the proposal, and Council passed a motion on December 16th to work with the family and other stakeholders to find a suitable roadway. The report from city staff highlights Quinn's significant contributions through the Vancouver Canucks, the Vancouver Giants Western Hockey League team, the World Cup, and Canada's Olympic Men's Hockey team.

The idea of renaming the road after Quinn was originally suggested by radio personality Tom Mayenknecht.
The City also considered giving Quinn's name to the plaza south of the Pacific Coliseum, but the section near Rogers Arena was thought to better showcase Quinn's legacy and was more central. The businesses in the area are all addressed from Griffiths Way, meaning that the renaming will have minimal impact. Quinn's family also preferred the centrality of the Abbott Street section as well as its proximity to the Vancouver Canucks venue.
Vancouver City Council will be considering the renaming on March 4th.
